Florida Governor’s Retirement Proposals -

· Require government employees to contribute five percent of their salaries to the retirement system

· Require new employees to enroll in investment plans similar to private sector 401(k)s.

· Close the Deferred Retirement Option Program to new participants as of July 1, 2011

· Reduce the annual service credit to 1.6 percent for most members (special risk class members reduced to two percent)

· Eliminate Cost of Living Adjustment on retirement benefits for all service earned after July 1, 2011 - Current retirees will be unaffected

Governor Rick Scott Announces Budget Proposals That Will Save $2.8 Billion Over Two Years by Modernizing the Florida Retirement System

Naples, Fla. – Keeping in line with his 7-7-7 plan and his plan to modernize the Florida

Retirement System, Governor Rick Scott announced today that he would send the Legislature a

budget proposal that better aligns government workers’ pensions with those in the private

sector and saves taxpayers $2.8 billion over two years.

Governor Scott announced that the savings would be realized by requiring government

employees to contribute five percent of their salaries to the system and requiring new

employees to enroll in investment plans similar to private sector 401(k)s.

“We must bring Florida in line with the private sector and nearly every other state in the

country by requiring government workers to contribute towards their own retirement,” said

Governor Scott.

The Governor also announced his intention to close the Deferred Retirement Option Program

to new participants as of July 1, 2011, and to reduce the annual service credit to 1.6 percent for

most members (special risk class members, to two percent).

Governor Scott said the Cost of Living Adjustment on retirement benefits will be eliminated for

all service earned after July 1, 2011. Current retirees will be unaffected. Those members

retiring after July 1, 2011, will receive a three percent Cost of Living Adjustment on the

retirement benefit attributable to the service earned prior to July 1, 2011, and no cost of living

adjustment for service earned after July 1, 2011.

“Government workers, like private sector employees, deserve the opportunity to save for the

Governor Scott said that modernizing the Florida Retirement System would help reduce

spending and help get government back to its core missions

Governor Scott will send his full budget proposals to the Legislature on Monday, February 7th.

This is Nail biting hair pulling time. This is a little humour

This is not about Conchs or Key West but I thought with the stress everyone is sharing about *IKE* it might bring a little laughter to your day......... I found it true and funny but then I have been known to walk to the beat of a different drummer (so my precious Mama informed me).

You all should be aware of hurricane preparations, but in case you need a refresher course: You have entered the peak of the hurricane season. Right now, you can to turn on the TV and see a weather person pointing to some radar blob down in the Caribbean and making two basic meteorological points.

(1) There is no need to panic.
(2) You could all be killed.

Yes, hurricane season is an exciting time to be in Florida . If you're new to the area, you're probably wondering what you need to do to prepare for the possibility that we'll get hit by "the big one."

Based on our insurance industry experiences, we recommend that you follow this simple three-step hurricane preparedness plan:

STEP 1:

Buy enough food and bottled water to last your family for at least three days.

STEP 2:

Put these supplies into your car.

STEP 3:

Drive to Nebraska and remain there until Halloween. Unfortunately, statistics show that most people will not follow this sensible plan. Most people will foolishly stay in Florida .

We'll start with one of the most important hurricane preparedness items:

HOMEOWNERS' INSURANCE:

If you own a home, you must have hurricane insurance. Fortunately, this insurance is cheap and easy to get, as long as your home meets two basic requirements:

(1) It is reasonably well-built, and
(2) It is located in Wisconsin

Unfortunately, if your home is located in Florida, or any other area that might actually be hit by a hurricane, most insurance companies would prefer not to sell you hurricane insurance, because then they might be required to pay YOU money, and that is certainly not why they got into the insurance business in the first place. So you'll have to scrounge around for an insurance company, which will charge you an annual premium roughly equal to the replacement value of your house. At any moment, this company can drop you like used dental floss.

SHUTTERS:

Your house should have hurricane shutters on all the windows, all the doors. There are several types of shutters, with advantages and disadvantages:

Plywood shutters: The advantage is that, because you make them yourself, they're cheap.

Sheet-metal shutters: The advantage is that these work well, once you get them all up. The disadvantage is that once you get them all up, your hands will be useless bleeding stumps, and it will be December.

Roll-down shutters: The advantages are that they're very easy to use, and will definitely protect your house. The disadvantage is that you will have to sell your house to pay for them.

Hurricane-proof windows: These are the newest wrinkle in hurricane protection: They look like ordinary windows, but they can withstand hurricane winds! You can be sure of this, because the salesman says so. He lives in Nebraska .

Hurricane Proofing your property: As the hurricane approaches, check your yard for movable objects like barbecue grills, planters, patio furniture, visiting relatives, etc...

You should, as a precaution, throw these items into your swimming pool (if you don't have a swimming pool, you should have one built immediately). Otherwise, the hurricane winds will turn these objects into deadly missiles.

EVACUATION ROUTE:

If you live in a low-lying area, you should have an evacuation route planned out. (To determine whether you live in a low-lying area, look at your driver's license; if it says " Florida ," you live in a low-lying area). The purpose of having an evacuation route is to avoid being trapped in your home when a major storm hits. Instead, you will be trapped in a gigantic traffic jam several miles from your home, along with two hundred thousand other evacuees. So, as a bonus, you will not be lonely.

HURRICANE SUPPLIES:

If you don't evacuate, you will need a mess of supplies. Do not buy them now! Florida tradition requires that you wait until the last possible minute, then go to the supermarket and get into vicious fights with strangers over who gets the last can of cat food. In addition to food and water, you will need the following supplies:

23 flashlights. At least $167 worth of batteries that turn out, when the power goes off, to be the wrong size for the flashlights.

Bleach. (No, I don't know what the bleach is for. NOBODY knows what the bleach is for, but it's traditional, so GET some!)

A big knife that you can strap to your leg. (This will be useless in a hurricane, but it looks cool.)

A large quantity of raw chicken, to placate the alligators. (Ask anybody who went through Andrew; after the hurricane, there WILL be irate alligators.)

$35,000 in cash or diamonds so that, after the hurricane passes, you can buy a generator from a man with no discernible teeth.

Of course these are just basic precautions. As the hurricane draws near, it is vitally important that you keep abreast of the situation by turning on your television and watching TV reporters in rain slickers stand right next to the ocean and tell you over and over how vitally important it is for everybody to stay away from the ocean.

Sweet Potato

Sweet potatoes are a favorite food. Always looking for a different way to fix them.

Always have a few canned and frozen on hand in case I run out of fresh ones.

Cleaning kitchen cabinets and found an off brand can of sweet potatoes. It turned into a prize.

New recipe and tried it. Everybody thought it had come from the Ritz.

Try the recipe:

Sweet Potatoes Peach Bake
3 15 oz. Bruce's cut yams drained
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/3 cup broken pecans
1/4 tsp. ground ginger
1 small can of peach slices, drained
1 1/2 Tbsp. butter or margarine.

combine brown sugar,pecans,ginger,and salt.
In a casserole dish Layer half of sweet potatoes.
Then half the brown sugar mixture on potatoes and dot with butter or margarine. Repeat layering.

Bake covered in 350F oven for 30 minutes. Uncover and put drained peaches on top. Bake another 10 minutes.

Suggestion when you have left overs baked sweet potatoes save peel and chop and use for this recipe.

Cheesecake is a favorite of many. The New York cheese cake takes many hours of prep time. Quicker to buy one at the store. However there are some shortcut recipes that are very tastey.

My friend has a favorite she calls Cranberry Chocolate cheesecake and she loves cranberries and chocolate.

Crust:
Oreo chocolate sandwich cookies (about 18 sometimes more)
1/2 cup of sugar
1 stick of butter

Filling:
Cream cheese at room temperature (4 8 ounce pakages)
4 eggs room temperature
1 cup of sugar
1 teaspoon of vanilla extract

Topping:
1 stick of butter
1 1/2 cups of sugar
1/2 cup of Karo corn syrup
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup sliced cranberries ( frozen or fresh)
Pinch of salt
1 cup of chopped pecans
1/4 cup semisweet chocolate chips
1/4 cup white chocolate chips

Work Time:
1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees
2.The crust, Oreo cookies grind into crumbs
3. Combine the cookie crumbs,sugar,and melted butter.
4. Press into the bottom of a spring form pan ( cheesecake spring form). Bake 6 to 10 minutes or until crust is set.
5.Filling is next, You need your electric beater. Whip cream cheese until soft and there are no lumps. Whisk together eggs,sugar, and vanilla until combined. Gradually add this to the Cream cheese and continue whipping mixture. Add the filling to prepared crust and bake for 55 to 75 minutes or until it is set. This must cool completely.
6. Yummy topping is next. Combine butter,sugar,syrup,vanilla,cranberries,and salt in a pot,cook on medium heat until soft ball stage is reached. Stir in pecans and chocolate chips. Allow to cool for about 10 minutes. Spoon topping onto cooled cheesecake. Cooling time again. This must completely cool before you remove from springform pan and serving.

Before training, Roscoe and Felix roamed remote stretches of Northern California and Wyoming, as their predecessors have for centuries. They have plenty of experience making their way through rivers and streams, up mountain trails and over densely forested land,
Roscoe, a muscular bay gelding with alert black eyes and Felix, who is just a little smaller and darker in color, are part of Operation Nobte Mustang a pilot project of the US. Border Patrol’s Spokane sector that uses formerly wild horses captured from the estimated 31,000 still roaming the West.
Known for their sure-footedness, strength and enduralice , mustangs also represent potential savings for the federal government. They are adopted from the Federal Bureau of Land Management,http://www.wildhorseandburro.blm.gov/index.php,and trained by inmates of Cobradfl Cañon City Correctional Institute. Protected by Congress since1971 under the Wild 1ree- Roaming Horses and Burros Act, the wild population is managed by the BLM. Estimates put the wfld horse population at about 31,000 horses ranging over 10 Western states. The ELM calculates that the food and water available to the animals in the wild can sustain about 27,000 musngs.
The horses have no natural predators and breed efficiently. As a result, the herd doubles about every four years. ELM periodically captures the horses in various locations around the West, and puts the animals out for adoption to the public. Since the program began in 1973, more than 200,000 horses and burros have been adopted.

Recipe for Those Counting Calories

Everyone in the household is not on a diet.
What are you going to do.

Make all meals healthy.

Dinner for 4:
Lime Shrimp!

Prep Time: 60 minutes (including marinating) and Cook : 10 minutes

Items Needed:

1 pound of shrimp, peeled and deveined
1 shallot, minced
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 serrano chilies, seeded and finely chopped
4 scallions, thinly sliced
1/2 cup of fresh cilantro, chopped
1/2 cup of parsley, chopped
2 tbsp. honey
1/2 cup water
1/8 tsp. freshly ground black pepper
1 cup fresh lime juice
1/4 tsp. salt (optional)
1/2 cup olive oil

How to: 1. Place cleaned shrimp in a small bowl and refrigerate.
   2. Combine shallots, garlic, chilies, scallions, cilantro, parsley, honey, water, and pepper in a medium mixing bowl. In another medium bowl, combine lime juice and salt, and slowly whisk in olive oil. Add lime-oil mixture over shrimp and refrigerate 1 hour before grilling.
   3. Light the grill.
   4. Remove shrimp from refrigerator and drain for 5 minutes before grilling. Thread 5-6 shrimp on a wooden or metal kabob stick. Make sure grill is clean and hot. Place shrimp on grill and cook about 2-3 minutes on each side. Serve.

No Grill Try this:
Metal Kabob stick on a cookie sheet and broil under oven broiler.

The final date for application changes from year to year and is generally somewhere near the beginning of summer. Earlier is much better than later as far too many students wait until closer to deadline in order to fill out their forms and if you have any questions you are likely to find yourself standing in or calling into longer lines for your answers.

There are a few things you need to know about the FAFSA. Most schools require this form to have been filled out before they will award any financial aid, not just federal financial aid. In other words you should check with your school but you may need to fill out this form even if you are only applying for departmental scholarships and not federal financial aid. Another thing that you must remember is that while a subsidized student loan doesn't been to accrue interest until you graduate or cease to be enrolled for the required hours, an unsubsidized student loan begin accruing interest from day one. This means that you will owe a substantial amount of money in interest upon graduation if you take out an unsubsidized student loan in order to pay for educational expenses.

Student loans make college educations possible for many people who would not otherwise have the opportunity to attend college. At the same time there are many people, who neglect to use these loans responsibly, which is the beginning of irresponsible spending habits that can plague people for the remainder of their lives. Take great caution that you use your student loans for their intended purpose and use them wisely.

The FAFSA also enables you to apply for Federal Pell Grants and Federal Work Study programs in addition to student loans.
